Accessibility

• Read every page with the text at up to four times its size, without anything scrolling sideways.
• Reach everything with a keyboard alone, and always see where you are: a dark ring with a cream band marks the focused control.
• Press Tab once on any page and jump straight to its content, past the header.
• Use a screen reader to fill in every form. Each box is named, its hint and any error are read with it, and when a form is sent with something missing the keyboard is put on the first thing to fix.
• Turn animation off. If your device asks for reduced motion, nothing on this site moves, fades or counts up.
• Take as long as you like. Nothing here times out, and a half-filled form survives a refresh.
• Read text in high contrast. Every word of body text is at least 4.5:1 against its ground, and the notice beside every price is set at body size.

The pages are plain HTML with landmarks and headings in order, the language is declared as British English, and no information is carried by colour alone.

The certificate, the register card, the landlord letter and the pet summary are PDF files. They carry a title and a language, but they are not tagged, so a screen reader reads them as text without their structure. The same information is available as web pages: the register entry for any certificate can be read at /verify by its number, and your download page shows the entry as text beside the files. The words of your landlord letter are shown as text on the page where you approve them before the PDF is made.

Payment is taken on PayPal’s own buttons and pages, which we do not control. If they do not work for you, email us and we will find another way to take the order.

We have tested with a keyboard and with automated checks on every page, run again before every release. We have not yet had the site tested by people who use a screen reader every day. If that is you and something is wrong, we would like to know.

If something on this site does not work for you, or you cannot read or use part of it, email hello@ukesaregister.co.uk and say what happened and what you were using. We reply within one working day. If it is our fault we will fix it, and tell you when it is fixed.

UK ESA Register is a private business, so the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 do not apply to it. We hold ourselves to the standard they set, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 at level AA, all the same.

The Equality Act 2010 does apply. It asks a business that provides a service to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and not to wait to be asked. If you think we have fallen short and you are not happy with how we answered, the Equality Advisory and Support Service (equalityadvisoryservice.com) advises on the Equality Act in England, Scotland and Wales free of charge.
