Free emotional support animal registration in the UK: what's really on offer

Search for free ESA registration in the UK and you will find plenty of it. Almost none of it is free in the way you are hoping, and understanding why takes about four minutes.

Start from the fact that decides everything else: there is no official UK register of emotional support animals. No government scheme, no application, nothing to be accepted onto. Every registry is a private business’s own list. So “free registration” means “free entry onto a list that has no legal significance” — which is a strange thing to want, and nobody builds a business on giving it away for nothing.

Here is what is actually happening.

Model one: free to register, pay for the paperwork

You fill in a form, get a number, and are told you are registered. Then the certificate is £25, the ID card is another £20, the “digital verification listing” is another £15.

The registration was free because the registration is worthless on its own. The product was always the documents.

Model two: free to register, then a yearly fee

You register free, receive something, and a year later get an email saying your registration is about to lapse. Renewal is £30 to £50, and it recurs.

Keeping a row in a database costs a fraction of a penny a year. Nothing expires except by decision. Note also what a lapse-and-renew cycle implies about the earlier promise: a registration that can lapse was never a registration, it was a subscription with a certificate attached.

Model three: free registration as a lead for a paid letter

The registration is a genuinely free front door, and the actual product is an “ESA letter” from a professional, typically £49 to £150.

In the United States this model has a basis: a letter from a licensed professional carries real weight for housing under the Fair Housing Act. In the UK it does not. No letter from any professional gives an emotional support animal a legal right to housing or access here, because the underlying legal category does not exist. A letter can be a supportive document in a conversation. It is not an instrument.

If you are buying one because you have read American advice, that is the confusion the funnel is built on.

What is genuinely free and genuinely useful

Your actual rights as a renter in England. Since May 2026 you can formally request permission to keep a pet, your landlord must respond in writing within 28 days, and must not refuse unreasonably. Talking to whoever already supports you. If you have a GP, therapist or support worker, they know you. If a letter would help in a specific conversation, they are better placed to write it than a website that met you five minutes ago — and it costs nothing.

Your own photos. For most everyday situations, a phone with pictures of your well-behaved dog does the same job as a card.

So where does that leave a paid registration?

Honestly: it is a keepsake and a convenience. A properly made certificate and a wallet card with a checkable number are pleasant to own and occasionally handy — a letting agent’s office, a building’s front desk, a pet-friendly hotel where having something tidy to hand over beats scrolling through your camera roll.

That is what we sell, for £40 once, with no renewal ever. We think it is worth that and we would rather say so plainly than dress it up.
